In the statistical analysis of observational data, propensity score matching (PSM) is a statistical matching technique that attempts to estimate the effect of a treatment, policy, or other intervention by accounting for the covariates that predict receiving the treatment. PSM attempts to reduce the bias due to confounding variables that could be found in an estimate of the treatment effect. Propensity score matching techniques have been devised for this purpose . Formally, propensity score for a patient is the probability of being treated conditional on the patients' covariates values such as demographic and clinical factors. If we have two patients, one in the treatment and one in the control group, with the same or a similar propensity score, we can consider these subjects.
